The Wedge Boot Trend Is Back – Here’s How To Wear Them This Fall

Over the past few years, Y2K-mania has put plenty of happy and nostalgic (and sometimes downright questionable) pieces back on people’s radars. And if this latest fashion month is any indication, the early 2000s won’t be losing its influence anytime soon. The latest hot style on the scene? The often controversial trend of wedge boots. It hasn’t been particularly popular with fashion insiders over the past decade; however, the sartorial tide seems to be turning right now.

Speaking of wedges in general, it’s worth noting that angled sandal styles found their way back into notable collections during the summer of 2021. (ICYMI, this season was all about Lupita glass wedge sandals from Amina Muaddi.) So for those in the know, like Moda Operandi accessories director Ryan Kleman, the subsequent resurgence of wedge boots isn’t all that surprising. “It was only a matter of time before the market followed suit, and the trend is towards boots,” he told TZR.

The striking silhouette began showing up on the Fall/Winter 2022 runways, where legacy brands like Givenchy, Prada, Tom Ford and more sent an assortment of wedge sandals, slingbacks, pumps and, most importantly, heels. boots on his tracks. Puppets and Puppets’ cheesy wedge sandals also caused a stir at New York Fashion Week the previous season, foreshadowing the imminent return of the stacked shape.

Wedge design details then persisted on the Spring/Summer 2023 runways, such as at Bottega Veneta, where creative director Matthew Blazy offered an assortment of pointed-toe wedge boots – including a space-age-inspired metallic pair in woven leather. Contemporary shoe brand Stuart Weitzman has also explored new approaches to style. “It’s been really fun to reinvent the classic silhouette,” says Edmundo Castillo, the brand’s design manager. “This season, I made wedge boots with [elements like] lucite heels, buckles and crocodile leather. These dramatic details make [for] remarkable pieces that will easily fit into your wardrobe.

In case you haven’t gotten the memo, tall boots are one of the top footwear trends for the Fall/Winter 2022 season. When choosing a knee-high or taller wedge boot, the vice – Mytheresa’s fashion buying president, Tiffany Hsu, recommends sticking to thigh-high or patent wedge boots that are slick but not overdone. “You can pair them with an oversized coat or blazer to create a sophisticated silhouette,” she adds.

With a long knitted dress

Another trend to keep on your radar this fall (and beyond) is sweater dresses. Check off two trends in one go by pairing your favorite with wedge ankle boots – like this pair from Off-White that offers just enough edge without overpowering the look.

Ask any fashion insider and they’ll immediately tell you that a tailored ensemble in tweed makes for a surefire, polished outfit. and incredibly easy to assemble. If you want to spice up the look, a pair of paper white wedge boots will do the trick.

For those who like to make a memorable entrance once in a while, Kleman has a rule of thumb: the taller the boots, the more impact your look will have. “Above-the-knee variations can be easily worn over any pants or with dresses,” he says.
