The platform sandals trend is about to take over this summer
This year’s defining aesthetic can, for the most part, be split into two categories. First, there are looks that celebrate extravagance and sartorial showmanship – imagine micro-mini skirts and trailing fabric bustles. On another side ? A multitude of comfortable items that put practicality first. (Sweatpants, for example, emerged this spring as effortless, elastic-waisted alternatives to “real” pants.) However, there is a buzzing, unique option that sits at the intersection of drama and portability: the trend for platform sandals.
Featured throughout the Spring/Summer 2022 runways of Coperni, Chloé and Sacai, this season’s collection of noble yet level footwear prioritizes both stylish impact and comfort. Plus, summer 2022 platforms extend beyond the chunky soles and rubber band pairs of the 90s and early 2000s. In fact, this season’s many offerings have a little something thing for everyone.
By email, vagabonds Co-founder Marie Nilsson Peterzén calls platform sandals “the ultimate summer style.”
“They suit all ages, styles and occasions,” she says. “And, of course, there’s the fact that a platform sandal is both comfortable and stylish.” In her choice, platform sandals are surprisingly easy to wear and have a certain I do not know what. They have a quality, she says, that allows them to “bring an effortless freshness to any outfit.” His theory is that because the shoes are gravity-defying architectural feats, they pack more punch than, say, a flirtatious kitten heel or a thin, staggering stiletto.
According to WGSN+ trendlinea forecasting tool that combines machine learning and analytics to track the trajectory of particular styles, the current buzz for flats is just the start of something bigger.
“Platform sandals are a rising star trend in the US, expected to reach 4.5% share of sandals in 2023, having more than doubled in 2021,” the agency shares with TZR. And data from TrendCurve+ predicts the shoe will be a dominant, fashion-forward style, eclipsing other pairs on its rise. “The [flatform sandal trend] seems to be taking share of chunky, wedge soles, while heeled platform sandals are a growing trend in general.
In other words: you’ll want to get comfortable with high soles, because summer 2022 only sees the early stages of the trend.

For those not completely enthused by the flashy early years aesthetic often associated with platform sandals, a neutral pair might speak best to your taste. St. Agni’s Founder and Designer Lara Fells, invites you to discover its brand’s Marie woven platforms. “They’re a versatile style, envisioned for both the beach and the street, depending on how they’re [styled],” she says. “We love the textured element of woven leather and its ability to make a subtle statement.”
Indeed, minimalism is ingrained in St. Agni’s DNA. “We really appreciate 90s and 2000s fashion,” Fells continues. “However, our style leans more towards the refined and elevated elements of that era.”
Kick it by the pool
“On a casual beach day, [try] a platform pool slide,” recommends Peterzén of Vagabond. Given that you’ll be spending your day relaxing (perhaps with a piña colada or daiquiri in hand?), the platform sandal you choose should be simple and effortless – think Rag’s hot pink rubber sandals & Bone, which will make you feel like you are walking among the clouds. Bonus: Lightweight sandals won’t overcrowd your tote bag, leaving plenty of room for that beach read you can’t wait to dive into.
“For the past few seasons, the platform sandal has been an important part of [Vagabond’s] Spring/summer collections”, explains Peterzén. She admits, however, that she personally loves the strappy Courtney pair from the Swedish brand, shouting that the shoe is ideal for a night out with your closest friends. “These, I would wear with a midi dress,” she says.
Fashion Flip Flops
A luxurious pair of platform flip flops have the same nonchalant vibe as your standard flip flops while exuding sophistication with their sleek material. Pair them with a far-from-basic white tank top, lightweight pants and sunset-hued sunglasses for an impeccable weekend outfit.
Vacation Proof Shoes
Do you have a vacation on the program for which you are starting to prepare your clothing? You’ll want to include a pair of athletic rigs in your suitcase. “A sports sandal with a hook-and-loop closure ensures the perfect fit for long city walks,” says Peterzén. As the Vagabond co-founder describes, the straps allow for easy adjustment and the sturdy base provides ideal stability and ease for a day spent exploring.
Vagabond’s Peterzén also focuses on fashionable fisherman sandals, categorizing the multi-strap sandal as a surefire shoe to invite into your summer workwear rotation. “The office fisherman sandal is great for adding a little extra freshness to any outfit,” she says. For an outfit that’s both casual and polished, anchor butter-toned pants and an airy wrap blouse with espadrille-soled platforms.
Channel a grungy attitude with a pair of chunky rubber flat soles. To stay in the edgy vibe, finish the outfit with an on-trend leather blazer (a fashion staple) and a black handbag.
